Working On and Off Campus

As an F-1 or J-1 international student at Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK, you are eligible for certain employment benefits but are limited in the numbers of hours you can work, your employment location and duties, and the duration of your employment. Please review the information on this page about your employment options.

Campus Employment

Campus EmploymentIf you are an F-1 or J-1 student, you are allowed to work on campus if the position provides direct services to students. When school is in session, you can work up to 20 hours per week. During breaks and when classes are not in session, you can work up to 37.5 hours per week. Campus employment opportunities are posted online by The Exchange

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

If you are an F-1 student, CPT enables you to work in paid or unpaid positions while taking classes. CPT authorization permits you to work off-campus in positions that directly relate to your program of study and are integral to your program’s curriculum. You must have a job offer letter and approval from your academic advisor in order for CPT to be authorized by the Office of International Student Success and Global Engagement.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Optional Practical TrainingIf you are an F-1 student, OPT enables you to work in a job that directly relates to your program of study. OPT authorization is provided by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Requests for authorization take three to four months to process and require an application fee. The OPT work period is generally for one year with a possible extension of an additional 24 months if your field of study is in an approved science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) field. 

Academic Training (AT)

If you are a J-1 student, AT enables you to work in a job directly related to your program of study after one semester of your program or after graduation. The Office of International Student Success and Global Engagement provides the authorization for employment. Requests for authorization take about one week to process. The AT work authorization is date and employer specific. While pursuing your academic program, AT is available on a part-time basis. After the completion of your program, AT must be full-time.
